A person, not a bot
When you request support on abay, a real person appears on the other side of the screen. Not an automated reply, not a chatbot. Someone who knows the area and is registered as a licensed guide interpreter will be with you on your trip.
Only people registered as national government licensed guide interpreters, or as regional guide interpreters, under the Licensed Guide Interpreters Act can register as supporters. abay requires documents evidencing the qualification.
Supporters who list an event must carry liability insurance for guide interpreters. An event is not published until that coverage has been confirmed.
Compare profiles before you make a request and choose the person who suits you. Whether by video call or in person, you begin already able to see each other.
Two ways to meet
These are the first two options in the app. Both reach the same supporters. You can arrange support before your trip, or find someone on the spot.
Chat / Call
Chat and video call let you ask right away — while planning your trip, or when something goes wrong during it. You can share your location as you talk, so there is no need to explain where you are.
In-person
Meet on the day and get help directly: interpretation, directions, shopping and meals. The time you would otherwise spend stuck without the language simply disappears.
Another way in
Besides making a request, you can join an event planned by a supporter. The person who planned it guides and accompanies you, so it works even if you are travelling alone.
You can join on your own, or book an event privately for your group. All of them are small, and only events whose liability insurance has been confirmed are published.
Someone can tell you about the places the guidebooks leave out.
