Requirements
You need to be registered
as a guide interpreter.
To ensure the quality of support, abay limits registration to licensed guide interpreters. We may ask for documents evidencing the qualification when you apply, and at any time thereafter.
Qualification
Registered as a national government licensed guide interpreter, or as a regional guide interpreter, under the Licensed Guide Interpreters Act.
Insurance (if you host events)
Covered by liability insurance for guide interpreters, or other insurance meeting the requirements abay sets. Your event is not published until the coverage has been confirmed.
If you no longer meet the requirements
Notify abay without delay if your qualification or insurance lapses or is revoked. If we find that the requirements are not met, we may suspend the account or unpublish events.

Getting started
From sign-up
to getting paid.

Sign up and get verified
You need a national guide-interpreter registration and identity verification. Hosting events also requires liability insurance.

Apply to requests you can take
Browse open requests and apply to the ones you can help with. Travelers can also request you directly by name.

Provide support
By chat or call right away, or meet in person. You can also plan and host your own small events.

Get paid
Your confirmed earnings and deductions are itemised in a monthly payment statement.
Receiving payment requires identity verification by our payment processor (Stripe or similar). Payouts cover work you have completed and for which the traveler's payment has cleared.

What you can and cannot do
within abay.
abay does not hold a travel agency registration, so the services you may provide through it are limited to what falls outside the Travel Agency Act.
You can
- Interpret
- Guide
- Accompany travelers on site
- Provide opportunities for experience and interaction (demonstrations of and instruction in cooking, crafts and the like, interaction programmes involving food and drink, outdoor activities)
You cannot
- Purchase or book transport tickets (rail, bus, taxi, air, sea) on a traveler's behalf
- Book accommodation, or change such bookings, on a traveler's behalf
- Purchase or book admission tickets for facilities and events on a traveler's behalf
- Create or propose an itinerary spanning multiple days
- Propose or sell a package combining transport and accommodation
What is prohibited is making arrangements, bookings or purchases, or creating itineraries, on a traveler's behalf. You can still interpret, guide and advise while the traveler books or buys for themselves. Nor does this prevent you from carrying out such work outside abay, once you hold a travel agency registration.

abay is a platform that provides matching, payments, and communication tools for travelers and supporters. Services such as interpretation, accompaniment, and events are provided directly to travelers by supporters.
* Neither abay nor supporters book or arrange third-party services such as transportation tickets, accommodation, or admission tickets.
